Staff & Youth To Build Butterfly Garden at Boys & Girls Club
Wednesday, April 25th The Boys & Girls Clubs of Merced is inviting the community to take part in what is being billed as the Earth Day Triple Play. BGC Merced will celebrate Earth Day by creating a butterfly garden, making homemade ice cream, and making arts and crafts that involve natural products.
The festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. and all club members present will make biodegradable items that will teach them to appreciate the earth and its bounty. They will also be able to plant seeds to grow flowers that attract butterflies. The goal is to be able to watch the entire growth and development process from caterpillar to butterfly, allowing members to witness the metamorphosis. Light refreshments will be provided.
The Boys & Girls Club provides a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle. This is a special announcement about the April UC Merced/Challenger April Lecture tomorrow. I’m sending you the last minute notice because of the speaker’s message, his position at UC Merced and because we got very little publicity in the papers.

The topic is: “Adventures in Computational Science and How Mathematics Will Help Save the World.” The speaker is Juan C. Meza, Dean of the UCM School of Natural Sciences and Professor of Applied Mathematics.

Dean Meza was named one of Hispanic Business magazine’s “Top 100 Influentials” of 2009 and formerly headed high-performance computing research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

This is Dr. Meza’s description of his presentation:

“Computational science is playing an increasingly important role in scientific discovery. In fact, it is now seen as the equal of theory and experiments. This is a result of better simulation tools and a rapid growth in computer power. More importantly, it is a result of better mathematics. I will first discuss some examples from climate modeling, energy, and the environment. I will then explain how math is used in these examples and how it will help save the world.”

Again, the Lecture will be held at Saturday, April 14th at 10:00 AM in the Castle Science & Technology Center Einstein Room. Please attend and share the information with others who might be interested.

Here is a follow-up Pic of the last reported five puppies turned into Seven total! “Trudy” is showing to be a good first time mother.

Until Jim Weaver Showed up! Seems that Kathy and I were in a Card/Picture, relaxing with Santa at the Pancake benefit  for the Boys & Girls Club. Jim, of course… made sure that I was fined for not advertising Kiwanis at this “Non Kiwanis Function”.  I parted with two bucks for that! See card below.

A Kiwanis member Pauline Hirohata from Honolulu Hawaii, was here in Merced visiting her granddaughter and dropped in on us again. (she visited us last year also.)

It was decided that John Carlos, Dave Brown and Janice Rogge, along with several KIWIN members, would attend the DCM in Modesto this Friday evening. Al Smith will be pleased, I’m sure.

Tony Slaton from the Boys & Girls Club was our featured speaker. Of course his passion for the kids was shining through in what he had lined up for them! Thanks Tony!
